Skerries local and triathlon athlete, Lochlann Walsh, along with Noel
McCluskey who organises triathlons, approached the fundraisers at Skerries with
an idea to run an Aquathlon in aid of the local RNLI Lifeboat station. Lochlanns
Father had been involved with the local lifeboat so Lochlann was very conscious
of the importance of the station locally and how critical it is to keep it
funded.
The 80 athletes who took part on the day to raise these vital funds deserve
a special ‘thank you’. For each and every one had gone that extra mile (no pun
intended) to get the local branch across the finish line with their hope to
raise €4000 from the event. An aquathlon is a triathlon without the cycling
section. On the day there were two events. A regular Aquathlon which is made up
of a 750 metre swim and a 4km run and a Super Aquathlon that consists of a 1500
metre swim and 8km run. Only the more experienced athletes challenge themselves
with an Olympic distance 1500 metre swim and an 8km run. The weather on the day
was spectacular.
Huge thanks must also go to the sponsors who stepped up with prizes in
these difficult economic times. Local man, Malachy McCloskey of Boyne Valley
Foods, presented 6 beautiful hampers and a number of local and national
businesses also helped make this fundraising event a success, Eurospar, Brennans
Bread, Carroll Cuisine, IDBC. Thanks must also go to the local Sea Scout Troop
and the Order of Malta.
Prior to the race start, Race Secretary, Noel McCluskey, said that he very
much enjoyed being involved with the charity and that he felt that the RNLI was
a very worthy cause. 'The RNLI do a fantastic job. They really are unsung heros
and we hope that the money we raise can help them save lives. Hopefully, this
will become an annual event'.
